Yorkshire Water Workshops - Key Stage 2
In Year 3/4 we talked about the water cycle and recalled what all the vocabulary meant. We found out what pollutes our water and how the water board cleans the water of all the baddies, such as algae and bacteria. We learnt about the processes of flocculation, flotation and filtration and watched a film showing the filtration plant and how this works. After this, we conducted an experiment using raisins to represent the baddies in the water and some sparkling water to demonstrate how the addition of bubbles helps these particles to float to the surface so they can be removed. This was great revision of the water cycle and a fun experiment too!
Year 5/6 had a workshop with Yorkshire Water about the problem of waste! They presented us with information about how sewers are blocked by some of the things that people flush away like wipes and FOG (Fat, Oil & Grease.) They then created a BOT using Lego and programmed it to follow a route on a map that would allow the BOT to pick up the waste and take it to the recycling centre instead. We impressed our visitors with our teamwork, and skills.
